In these classes, students seek ease and stillness in the mind while challenging the physical body to release fear and tension by maintaining poses for relatively long periods of time. The energy of a Hatha practice has an inward quality, so that physical effort manifests as calmness. For this reason, these classes may particularly appeal to students interested in experiencing a counterpoint to the kinetic energy of flow classes.
Enabled by precise instruction regarding alignment and the use of the breath, students may take several minutes to work the nuances of each pose and to probe its subtle effects on the mind and body. Asana thus becomes not only an opportunity to develop strength, but also an opportunity to meditate on the nature of strength.
In addition to familiar poses, students will explore backbends and inversions, examine twists, and experiment with arm balances. Overtime, a literal opening of the body and a more precise understanding of one's own anatomy will yield an awakening at all levels of the self.
