Rama Ramanathan, Yoga Alliance (R.Y.T. 500) is a certified yoga instructor with 19 years of teaching experience. Rama studied at the Sivananda Yoga Centers, under Martin Bland, the centenarian yogi Swami Bua, and also Srivatsa Ramaswami, who taught him the Vinyasakrama yoga of the late Sri Krishnamacharya of India, who has taught yoga teachers like B.K.S. Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois. (Srivatsa Ramaswami is the author of the book, Yoga fvor the Three Stages of Life published by Inner Traditions, USA.)

Rama was introduced to yoga at age 18 by his uncle. He has taught at a number of hospitals, corporations, fitness centers, yoga studios, schools, senior centers, and summer camps for children. He has taught "Power" yoga, gentle yoga, "Sivananda" yoga, and he now teaches the "Vinyasa Krama", the style of yoga that meets the needs of all individuals irrespective of age, physical and mental capabilities. "Vinyasa" means a joining or linking mechanism; a fluid movement. "Krama" means "the method." Vinyasa krama allows one to do a main, classical asana (posture) by doing all the preliminary movements preparatory to that pose. It is a logical, well-planned sequence of movements in one or more yogic postures or sequences, synchronized with appropriate breathing.

Rama is a volunteer at the Chinmaya Mission, a world-wide organization, which teaches Vedanta to adults and value-based education to children. He attends Vedic chanting classes and also organizes Indian classical music and dance concerts in the tristate area.

Srivatsa Ramaswami learned from the great legendary teacher, Krishnamacharya, who taught other world-renowned Indian yoga masters such as B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and T.V.K. Desikachar.

Rajam's approach to yoga is classical incorporating the traditional form of yoga. At the same time, having received training from different masters, she has developed a unique approach to yoga successfully integrating strong emphasis on alignment, strength and flexibility associated with "Iyengar" yoga, the methodical sequencing of "Sivananda" yoga, the vigourous, integrative movements of "Bua" yoga, and with the vinyasa flow style (Vinyasa Krama). Her classes are appropriate for both beginning and intermediate level students. Incorporating compassion, relevance, and power in her teaching, Rajam's classes are tailored to suit the needs of students with different abilities and special needs.

Valerie Skillman
View Pose

Valerie found yoga at her doctorís suggestion that it might help lower her borderline high blood pressure. Since the very first time she stepped on the mat, she developed a love of the practice and found a calmness that had been lacking in her hectic life being the mother of 4 children. The asanas, pranayma, meditations and philosophy quickly became her journey and passion. Almost as quickly, she discovered that the practice of vinyasa resonated with her most and brings her to a place in her spirituality that words cannot begin to describe.

Valerie embarked into teacher training with the desire to share this passion with others. She completed her 500 hr teacher training at One Yoga Center in May, 2009. She is a RYT with Yoga Alliance 500 hr level and has been teaching in the area steadily since receiving her 200 hr. certification in November 2008. She has attended workshops with Seane Corn, Shiva Rea and completed level one of Baron Baptisteís Power VinyasaYoga Boot Camp for teachers in August 2009. She is certified to teach Hatha, gentle, Kids/ teens, pre-natal ,Power, Vinyasa as well as pranayama & meditation. In addition to teaching in traditional settings, Valerie also teaches the 4th & 5th grade yoga to her sonsí classes on a voluntary basis and hopes to continue bringing this gift to the children. Practicing Karma yoga is an important part of her passion. Her own personal practice has continued to remain strong and regular so that she may continue to share the inspiration yoga has brought to her with others.
